So You Say You Can’t Sleep (original poem)

So You Say You Can’t Sleep (original poem)

This is where it all started in 2013 when I was pregnant with Hattie. I wrote her a lullaby I could sing to her…then turned it into a poem that I eventually wanted to make into a book….

But, then it sat unpublished and unillustrated for the better part of a decade!!!

Thanks to all my amazing supporters it’s now finished and SELLING!

So you say you can’t sleep,

can’t turn over,

 rest your cheek

against the pillow and just close your eyes

It’s unfair, you don’t know

what you’re missing if you go

but you’re missing so much more if you don’t.

——-

Sleep my dear and you will see

When we sleep our minds are free

To do and be whatever our hearts desire

Grow some wings and soar the sky

Know just what if feels to fly

With birds alike you’ll rest high on a wire

——-

Lead a fleet of pirate hands

Coast around from land to land

Find new treasure every time you sail

Then dive below the deep blue sea,

Swim with mermaids wild and free

Push the limits of your new fishy tail

—-

Leave behind the wild life,

Jump on stage with big bright lights

And sing aloud to adoring fans

why not drive in a big race

Go real fast to win first place

Then wave to all your friends up in the stands

——

Get in the game with pro athletes

See how fast you move your feet

And put all of your new skills to the test

For when you sleep your mind is free

To run and play and do and see

All the while your body is at rest

—–

Sleep my dear so you will see

That all the things you wish to be

Are right behind the sleep you want to fight…

Close your eyes, dream for me

Know I love you endlessly

And see the world you’ll only see at night!
